When the oceans were being churned by the devas and the asuras, it was Lord Dhanvantari who appeared with a pot of the elixir of life or amrit. An avatar of Lord Vishnu, Dhanvantari is the physician of the gods. He is also the God of Ayurveda.
Travelling through the tribal heartlands of Odisha, we came close to the ideal we had in mind of natural living. We saw how closely the people lived with the land, as if it were their true god and mother. Farmers and foragers we met here seem to have internalised the principles of Ayurveda.
