The marketplace is flooded with olive oil. Walk into any store and you will see different brands and variants of olive oil on the shelves. The most preferred oil, from the Mediterranean, is slowly becoming popular among Indians too. Olive oil is touted as a healthier option compared to the regular vegetable oil that we use.
There are debates whether olive oil works well in Indian weather conditions. But, did you know that the olive oil is used for non-dietary purposes too? Yes! The people in the Mediterranean region have been using this oil since 6000 BC not only for cooking but also on their skin, hair and as an anti-bacterial agent.
Before we understand the benefits let us understand the various variants of the oil.
Different types of Olive oil
Extra virgin olive oil, olive oil light, virgin olive oil. We see these different brands in any store but what is the difference between these variants? How does one choose the best one?
Olive oil is graded based on the amount of processing it has gone through.
- Extra virgin olive oil/organic olive oil- obtained from the first pressing of olives. Minimal processing
- Virgin Olive oil- obtained from the second pressing. Undergoes some amount of processing.
- Pure olive oil- obtained from rigorous processing like refining and filtering
- Extra light oil- obtained after huge processing and has very delicate olive flavours in it.
Needless to say, Extra Virgin olive oil or organic olive oil is the best variety available and should be most preferred.
Non-dietary benefits of Olive oil:
Anti-ageing property: Olive oil is high in anti-oxidants. It contains three major anti-oxidants. Vitamin E, polyphenols and polysterols. Antioxidants like vitamin E prevent premature skin ageing and also protects it from ultraviolet rays. Hydroxytyrosol is a compound found in olive oil that protects the skin from free radical damage.
Excellent moisturiser: Commercial moisturisers are heavy in nature and tend to clog the pores of the skin. Olive oil, on the other hand, is light in nature. It penetrates deeply into the skin and provides a cleansing effect. The result is healthier skin minus an oily feeling and clogged pores.
Vitamin Rich: Olive oil is rich in fat-soluble vitamins like A and E. These vitamins are excellent for our skin and promote healthy and radiant skin.
Excellent exfoliator: A mixture of olive oil and sea salt is said to be a gentle and effective exfoliator for the skin. It abrasive quality of sea salt along with the penetrating action of olive oil removes dead skin cells leaving the epidermis looking renewed and glowing.
Improves hair condition and growth: regularly massaging hair and scalp with olive oil has many benefits. It softens the hair, improves hair growth, helps to get rid of split ends, helps eliminate dandruff and helps manage the frizz.
Olive oil in soap
Given the many benefits of olive oil on our skin, it is natural that people would like to use it on their skin. The Greeks and Romans used olive oil based cleansers. This was part of their daily regimen.
Today, there are olive oil based soaps available in the market. But again, we would advise you to stay away from the commercially manufactured ones. It is always better to use cold processed Castille soaps that are devoid of chemicals.
So, what are the advantages of using an olive oil based soap? Olive oil based soaps give all the above-mentioned benefits like moisturising the skin, fights free radicals and prevents ageing.
Also, these soaps replenish the natural oil in the skin. As we age and due to use of chemicals our skin loses its natural oil. It makes our skin look wrinkled. The natural oils in olive oil help the skin to replenish its lost oil thus giving it a younger and smooth look.
Since it’s a natural product, olive oil based soap can be used by people of all ages and with all skin types. People with dry skin have seen improved skin conditions and those with sensitive skin are also happy using olive oil soaps.
